HISTORY
A little DYPC history - As told by Chuck G.
After ICYPAA in Houston 1977, Bob G., Chuck G. and Kate G. (all had been on the Committee in 1976 at the Philadelphia ICYPAA) were on the same flight back to Philadelphia when Bob G leaned across the aisle and suggested we needed to start a local Young People’s AA Conference to keep the positive benefits of strong community we got putting on and attending the ICYPAA. We started with a first general meeting at the house of Chuck & Kate G. in Downingtown at 26 Windermere Ct. We had in attendance, Bob G., Becky B., Jim F., Chuck G., Kate G., Charlie L., ….
We decided on Halloween as a great weekend and started looking around for sites where we could hold the weekend event.
Downingtown YMCA Camp had a 600 acre facility on top of the hill near the Trestle Bridge off Rt 322 and we found that we could do it on the cheap for $32.50 per person. The bunk houses were cold and drafty, Showers shocked you if you touched the pipes while taking a shower. The place was perfect. Becky B did the pumpkin face art work for the first t-shirt.
The camp had a recreation hall we could use to decorate for the Halloween dance and we arraigned for a food committee to offer snacks and a late bite on Friday and Saturday night. The program committee put our ICYPAA experiences to use for meeting titles so we made sure to have a Love and Lust meeting late on Saturday night. This was a Young People’s AA Conference after all.
We stayed there for 1977 – 1984 or so when the YMCA decided to sell the property to a developer. We then found Camp Innabah, where we have stayed to this day.
